From Turnaround Expert to Real Estate Heavyweight

Dániel Jellinek has long been a major player in Hungary. Now he is increasingly turning his focus to Western Europe.

In the former Eastern Bloc, Western investors were the main drivers of prosperity, laying the foundations for the rapid catch-up of once centrally planned economies. Yet, more than three decades after the fall of communism, local entrepreneurial spirit has also emerged, producing notable success stories. Increasingly, from the Baltics to the Balkans, there are examples of businessmen who have built fortunes at home and are now looking westward for new opportunities.

One of them is Dániel Jellinek, among Hungary’s most successful entrepreneurs. Born in Budapest in 1976 to a mathematician mother, he recalls being fascinated by calculations from an early age:

“I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. As soon as the Iron Curtain fell, I went to Austria to buy cassettes for recording music, which I then sold back home. That was how I started making some money.”
